February’s 8.9 percent unemployment figure posted today by the Department of Labor barely nudged out January’s 9.0 percent as the highest in awhile. Is this success? The economy added 192,000 jobs last month mainly in factories, professional and business services, education, and health care. However, local governments and retailers cut positions. Notice jobs added are in occupations requiring higher education or a skilled trade. As our economy continues to recover, we implore lawmakers to “not rob Peter to pay Paul” by slashing education benefits or raising tuition in order to fund something less critical such as the space program. Education, health, housing and labor equity is a must so everyone can aim for the stars—not just a privileged few.
