Trade Tip: Get Engaged

Trade Tip: Get Engaged

How do you keep a client’s trust and continued business? Get engaged with them. No, we’re not suggesting you ask for their hand in marriage and take a walk down the aisle (smile). That’s a little too much. Although, we are recommending an intimacy with them beyond the daily mechanics of simply managing their account or campaign. Increasingly, we are bombarded with constant emails, text messages, Facebook, Twitter, and mounting “need it now” to do lists—all elements siphoning seconds and minutes from our undivided attention. If our attention span for watching a commercial was eight seconds a year ago, it’s less now. Given this pattern, it’s easy to see how lengthy client meetings and conversations with longtime clients can lead us to become disengaged and uninterested. Longtime client relationships may give us a ‘comfort’ that we don’t need to be as engaged or interested as the first day we joyfully earned their trust, their business. This is a mistake.

Engage your client. Ask questions, pose suggestions, listen and learn how you can continue to meet and exceed their needs. As someone once said, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care."
